Former district of Medellin, Belen is now an emerging middle and upper class neighborhood. One of its peripheral areas (Zafra) was the first center of Afro-Colombian migration to Medellin. In some ways Belen is its own small town. It is one of the largest neighborhoods in Medellin in terms of geographical size and was the first epicenter of the local textile industry which is still remnant and visible today in the central sector of Belen.
Belen is the most populous neighborhood of Medellin today, similar to those of Envigado. As such, it faces ever increasing problems of traffic and congestion as the city of Medellin continues to grow at a rapid pace.
