The Palace of Beautiful Art has been the center of Medellin arts and culture since 1910, when it was founded as a school of music, painting and sculpture. Designed by Nel Rodriguez in 1925, the style is of new republican and the octagonal layout turns on its sides in order to give shape to the auditorium.
It houses workshops for education and training of the fine arts. Some of the most oustanding artists have studied in its halls, including Eladio Velez, Rodrigo Arenas Betancur, Debora Arango, Teresita Gomez and Fernando Botero. Many of these famed artists have also taught at the Institute. Visitors and travellers alike can appreciate the architectural details of the building as they attend a musical event or just browse permanent exhibitions from Medellin’s local artists.
