The Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez (House Museum) is one of Medellin’s most important cultural tourist attractions. The Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez was established on November 15, 1975 by the Gómez family in order to preserve the cultural heritage of the scholar and artist as well as his important works of art. Maestro Gómez is one of Latin America’s most famous and well known artists and is widely considered a pioneer of modern art in Colombia. At the time of his death in 1984, he donated his studio/house in Medellin to the city to be used as a museum.
Maestro Gómez was also an urban planner by profession and helped to design the Laureles neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia
The walls at the Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez are painted with some of his best murals. The value of his murals and frescos measure more than 656 feet and have have been recognized nationally and internationally. Some critics have declared him “the best mural artist in Latin America”. His murals depict the rich cultural heritage of Antioquia, Colombia and its people. Located in el Barrio Aranjuez de Medellín, the Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez is easily accessed from the Metro Station Universidad.
Other works are also on display at the Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez include a collection of more than 1500 items that were created by him during his lifetime. These include water colors, oil paintings, pastels, engravings, sculptures and wood carvings. His extensive personal art library was also bequeathed and includes more than 500 volumes of books, manifests, documents and research articles. The Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez is open to the general public including travelers, tourists and citizens alike who wish to understand more about the artistic and cultural influence of the iconic artist from Antioquia, Colombia. Guided tours are available to visitors of the museum.
