The predecessor to Plaza Mayor was Palacio de Exposiciones y Convenciones de Medellín S.A. This enterprise was inaugurated on August 21, 1975 in order to showcase the industrial strength and commercial attractiveness of Antioquia and Colombia as a whole. Sometime between 1992 and 1993, the national government and chamber of commerce hired the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness to assess the competitive advantages of the city, region and country. During 2002, a business plan was prepared for Plaza Mayor by the consultant and investment banker Carlos Andrade Carrasco in cooperation with the municipality of Medellin, the National Federation of Coffee Growers, the Chamber of Commerce, the Society of Architects, Sofía Aristizabal and Ricardo Espinel.
One of the most popular annual events at Plaza Mayor is Colombiamoda. Colombiamoda is Colombia’s biggest fashion exposition of the year where designers showcase their talents and clothes to the world. The event has been gaining in popularity year after year as international buyers and participants fly into Medellin from all around the globe to attend the event. In fact, almost 9000 people recently attended the exposition in 2010 at Plaza Mayor, which was a 4.5% increase over the prior year.
